Year-Round
Modern-Day Treasure Hunt: Geocaching

The newest Trinidad Lake State Park activity, geocaching is available year-round: during the quiet winter months and warm summer days. This high-tech treasure hunt utilizes map coordinates and a hand-held GPS to find the location of the cache. Visitors will take something from the cache and leave something behind. There are 6 caches at the park; visitors can rent a GPS for a small fee. See May 28 and May 29 for "Geocaching 101" programs. Trinidad Lake State Park, 32610 Highway 12 (3 miles west of Trinidad on the Scenic Highway of Legends). 719-846-6951, parks.state.co.us/parks/trinidadlake.

Architectural Structure and History, Landscapes, and the Culture of the Trinidad Area
Trinidad has an interesting and varied architectural history. Structural architecture and surrounding landscapes can help us identify cultural values and people's basic needs and thus learn a great deal about the people who have lived in the area. Found materials and imported plants, for example, indicate what was available to settlers and what they wanted to bring from their homelands. Adobe outbuildings to stately mansions, barns to carriage houses, vegetable gardens to European rosebushes—all help us visualize the challenges and rewards of living in the West. Karen Wolf, Coordinator of Gardens & Programs at the Trinidad History Museum (719-846-7217), will present this fascinating program.
